Addressing Burnout with Psychiatric Care — Brookline & Boston, MA

Here are some things to look at if you’re experiencing burnout.

Burnout is not exclusively a YOU problem. There are many things outside of your control that may be leading to you feeling like this.

The Job Demands-Resource Model of Burnout

Regardless of how individually resilient and active you are maintaining a healthy lifestyle, you can feel burned out at your job if :

  1. The work demands are too high for one person to complete.

  2. You do not have sufficient resources to complete your job.

  3. You feel unsupported by your workplace in getting your work done.

Burnout factors are highly unique to the individual.

What gets you feeling burned out may not necessarily affect others in the same way.

Factors Affecting Clinician Well-Being and Resilience.

When looking at the factors contributing to healthcare worker burnout, the National Academy of Medicine identified over 70 factors that could potentially lead to burnout. Healthcare worker or not, getting to the bottom of why you’re feeling so burned out can be complicated to figure out without help.

Why should I see a psychiatrist if I’m feeling burned out?

Oftentimes, I have found that individuals reporting feelings of burnout can also have co-occurring psychiatric conditions such as depression, anxiety, and substance use that may benefit from more formal psychiatric treatment.

Is burnout a psychiatric disorder?

Burnout is NOT a psychiatric disorder, but it is a work-related psychological condition characterized by emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and detachment from work.
